Chapter 1
Arrival Day
Brekkon
“I don’t know why I let you talk me into this,” muttered Javich, as we watched two injured Humans being carted away by Intra officers. They’d had some kind of altercation with a leggy, attractive Amazon, and now both men were bloody and moaning in pain. Admittedly, it had been kind of comical and a good distraction, considering we’d been standing in line for over two hours in the sweltering desert heat.
“One-hundred-thousand Seldova coins,” I replied, brushing away the sweat from my brow. I wasn’t used to the climate, and contemplated changing into my natural state, but knew it would cause a stir. Admittedly, part of me would enjoy seeing the alarm on some of their faces when they found Dragons in their midst. Right now, Javich and I both looked like two relatively young, healthy Humans; the only difference being that our vivid eye coloring gave away the fact that we were Meta. Mine were an iridescent silver, and Javich’s, a rich copper.
He glanced at me. “We’re only getting half of that. Who knows if we’ll see the other.”
It was true. Fifty-thousand Seldova, or S-Co, was to be deposited into our accounts when we checked into the Complex. Then, after we fulfilled a two-and-a-half year contract with the new ruling government, Ama Seldova (AS), we’d get the rest. But, we had to fulfill our end of the agreement, which was to be guinea pigs in an experiment to see if Metas and Humans could live in harmony with each other. If all went well, we’d get the rest of the money and become Ambassadors for the AS. Our futures would be set. At least, that’s what they told us.
Javich opened up his satchel and pulled out a flask. “No, you signed up because of the money,” he said, unscrewing the cork.
He had me there. Money didn’t mean much to Javich, although his family had some tucked away. He definitely wasn’t a gambler, unlike myself. Admittedly, I had a difficult time walking away from a game of cards or an opportune bet. But, he was a loyal friend and enjoyed an adventure. For Javich, this was just something to keep him entertained for the next couple of years. For me, it was a matter of life or death.
“That’s right. You signed up because you couldn’t live without me,” I joked, scanning the diverse crowd of Humans and Metas standing around. Most looked miserable and ready to turn back around, but desperation wouldn’t allow it. That’s why we were among them—none of us had a better choice than what they were offering at the Complex—a shitload of money, a job, and a safe place to live. In all honesty, not even Javich.
“In your dreams, Silver-puss,” he said with a little smirk. “I signed up to make sure you didn’t get yourself killed.”
“Eh, I’m safer here than back at home,” I replied, thinking about the onyx Dragon who’d soon be blowing smoke out of his ears when he realized I’d not only skipped town, but the planet.
“True, although if Talon finds out that you’re in Lorn, it might not be the case. He has friends everywhere. Hell, I’m probably a fool for following you to this place,” he said, eyeballing a beautiful Meta with green skin and violet-colored eyes.
He was probably right. I owed the bookie a lot of money and couldn’t pay him back. It was the main reason I’d signed up for the Complex experiment.
“True. It’s not your problem. Leave if you want. I won’t stop you,” I replied, watching out of the corner of my eye as the Meta smiled at him and began twirling a strand of dark brown hair around her finger.
Javich, whose only weakness was a pretty face no matter the color, puffed out his chest and deepened his voice. “You know I’d never abandon a friend, and if Talon shows up, or one of his cronies, he’ll have to go through me to get to you.”
Knowing Talon, he
’d find a way to get to me, even if it meant bribing an Intra officer. He’d already threatened to kill me if I didn’t show up with the twenty-thousand S-Co I owed, and he’d murdered for much less.
“Let’s just hope it doesn’t come down to that,” I replied, noticing someone watching me from the crowd. She was short, with light-blonde hair partially hidden under a cloak, and eyes the color of rich emeralds. I wasn’t sure of her species, but had to admit that she was very attractive. Our eyes met and she immediately looked away.
“He doesn’t look like he needs any protection,” said the Meta, who’d been listening in. She gave us a flirty smile. “In fact, the both of you look pretty formidable. Tell me,” she moved closer and lowered her voice. “Do either of you have mates?”
“Why, are you interested in becoming one?” Javich asked, amused.
“Maybe for one night,” she replied, now undressing the both of us with her eyes. “I’ve always wondered what it would be like to sleep with Dragons.”
My friend and I looked at each other and grinned. It wasn’t the first time we’d been propositioned. Some of the other Metas on our planet were very blunt, sexual creatures, males and females alike.
“One, or both of us?” Javich asked, crossing his arms over his chest, making his biceps appear bigger.
“Can I have both?” she asked, running her long, green fingernail over his arm.
“That answers that,” said Javich, looking at me.
We didn’t share partners. We didn’t share beds. And, neither of us had ever had sex with anyone outside of our own species, although I knew it was on Javich’s bucket list.
The Meta’s eyes traveled to his pants and then mine. She smiled coyly. “Are you not equipped for it in Human form?”
We were definitely equipped. In fact, the heat of her stare woke the sleeping Dragon under my belt. Apparently, as much as I wasn’t interested in bedding the green Meta, my manhood told another story. I placed my satchel in front of my waist to block her view. “Yes, but group sex isn’t my thing and I’m… engaged,” I lied.
Javich smirked and looked away.
“What a waste. My kind doesn’t believe in monogamy. Another reason why I signed up for the Complex. I want to enjoy everything there is to offer and in every way.”
“There’s definitely a smorgasbord of partners for you out here,” I said, glancing around. There were thousands of Metas and Humans equipped to please her. “You should have no problem finding yourself some new play toys.”
She tilted her head and smiled. “You’re amusing and I fancy you very much. Both of you together would be the ultimate fantasy.”
“Sorry, my fiancée would fry me if I were to stray. Literally,” I said with a sorry grin.
“How would she know if you were with someone else? Is she here?” asked the Meta, looking around.
“No. I’m devoted to her and only her, however,” I said, my eyes locking again with the blonde beauty, who was back to watching me. I knew she wasn’t a Dragon, but the woman was certainly fascinating.
“Bummer. What about you?” she asked, staring down at Javich’s crotch. “You appear to be enjoying this conversation.”
“I’m saving myself,” he said, only half-lying. If Javich wasn’t going to be with a Dragon, he only wanted a Human. The truth was, having sex out of our species was frowned upon by the elders. But Javich, being the adventurer that he was, didn’t seem too concerned about it.
“You’re kidding, right?” she said, staring at him in disbelief. She put her hand on her waist. “I could have sworn those golden eyes were checking me out a short while ago.”
“They’re copper, and madame, you are indeed desirable, but I am also promised to another,” he lied.
“Gah,” she said, rolling her eyes. “I had no idea that Dragons were such… loyal creatures. I guess it’s admirable, in a boring kind of way.”
“By the way, how did you know we were Dragons?” I asked, as the lines moved closer to the Complex.
“I have good ears and you mentioned the name ‘Talon’. I know of the onyx Dragon. I figured that if you had dealings with him, you were probably Dragons, too. Plus, your eyes aren’t exactly Human,” she replied, reaching into her traveling bag.
Talon did have a reputation throughout the Seldova Solar System. Like us, he resided on the planet Pinao, which was the largest of the three Meta planets, followed by Famiil and Creda. The Human-inhabited planets consisted of Wreston, Raxu, and Emalo. And then there was Lorn, which would be the first one shared by all.
Javich narrowed his eyes. “You don’t have any connections to him, do you?”
She pulled out what appeared to be candy-on-a-stick, or what I once heard someone call a ‘lollipop’, from her satchel and unwrapped it. “Why? Do you think he’d offer a reward for information on your whereabouts?”
Javich and I looked at each other.
“Of course, you already know a way to keep my mouth shut,” she replied with a devilish smile. “Put something into it.”
“Threatening us isn’t a good idea,” said Javich. “You don’t want to go down that road.”
“I was just asking a question,” she said, popping the lollipop into her mouth. “Although, you’d have to agree—there are no loyalties between us.”
“Are you seriously bribing us to have sex with you?” Javich asked, an incredulous look on his face.
“There are worse things, aren’t there?” she said, smiling.
He looked at me, and from his expression, I could tell he was considering her proposition.
I pulled him aside. “You don’t have to give in to protect me. In fact, you should be protecting yourself. Imagine the kinds of diseases she might have.”
“I’m clean,” she said, overhearing us.
He glanced toward her. “I believe her.”
I sighed. “You were saving yourself for a Human woman.”
He shrugged. “She looks Human. Just a different color.”
“What about her tongue?” It was forked. On some Dragons, it was sexy. On her, it was just plain weird.
“Honestly, I think it’s… interesting,” he said, smiling at the suggestive way she was licking her lollipop.
He was beyond my reach now. “You’ve obviously made up your mind.”
“I guess I have. You know—a Dragon’s gotta do what a Dragon’s gotta do.” He reached down to his crotch to rearrange himself. “And, to be honest, I think I gotta do her. For both our safety, of course.”
“You’re thinking with the wrong head, Javich, and I have a bad feeling about it,” I replied.
He put his hand on my shoulder. “Remember what you’re always telling me? Don’t sweat the small stuff.”
Something told me that I should have kept my big mouth shut.
“What’s your name, darlin’?” Javich asked, stepping back over to her.
She removed the lollipop from her mouth. “Cleo.”
“I’m Javich and that’s Brekkon.” He nodded my way. “So, you doing anything later tonight?”
She grinned happily. “Popping your cherry, evidently. You really haven’t had sex in your Human form before?”
“Nope,” he replied. “You’ll be the first.”
“I’m honored,” she said. “I’ll be sure to make the experience one you’ll never forget.”
We found out later that she wasn’t kidding.
Chapter 2
Natalya
I watched Cleo work her magic with the Dragons and sighed in relief when the shorter one put his arm around her. He’d obviously taken the bait, and in a few hours, I would have my hands on a vial or two of pure Dragon’s blood.
Thank you, Cleo.
Although I didn’t entirely trust the Meta, I knew Cleo wouldn’t double-cross me. Not when there was twenty-five thousand S-Co at stake, which is what I’d promised if she helped me obtain what I needed. That and to help her clear up a nasty genital infection. Cleo was very promiscuous and slept with m
any other species outside of her own, and apparently didn’t believe in protection. I wasn’t even sure exactly what kind of Meta Cleo was, and didn’t particularly care. As long as she kept her end of the bargain, I would get rid of her ailment, even if it meant using some of the precious Dragon’s blood. From what I’d learned, it could get rid of almost any fungus, viral, or bacterial disorder.
The other male glanced in my direction and I quickly looked away. I had to admit, they were both striking in their Human forms, especially the taller of the two. Strong jawline, a hawkish nose, and piercing silver eyes that one could get lost in. Admittedly, I was a little in awe that his natural state was a ferocious, fire-breathing Dragon. I also knew that it was a dangerous game that Cleo and I were playing. One false move and we’d either end up in jail or in cinders. But to me, it was worth the risk.
The Dragon’s blood was the reason I’d agreed to live at the Complex in the first place. As a Healer, I normally used spells to get rid of certain ailments or conditions. But my younger sister, Ria, had contracted some kind of rare skin disease and was now growing reptilian-type scales on her body. Not only were they disturbing to look at, but increasingly painful for the eighteen-year-old. After many failed attempts at trying to heal Ria through spells and elixirs, I dug deep into my research and learned of the incredible power of Dragon’s blood. Fortunately, I’d learned from a Complex recruiter that Dragon-shifters were among the Metas already signed up for the experiment, and I immediately added my name, along with Ria’s, to the list.
I stared up at the Complex and a chill went through me. This would be our new home and we weren’t allowed to leave once admitted inside. It was massive and intimidating, the structure was made of gleaming silver walls and giant domes that reached high up into the sky. Our recruiter had claimed it was forty-five miles high and sixty-miles wide, and he hadn’t been kidding.
“It’s kind of frightening, isn’t it?” said Ria, noticing that I was staring up at the Complex. “Like a big prison of some sort.”
